Milk thistle, scientifically called sylibum marianum has other common names, including blassed milkthistle, Marian thistle, Mediterranean milk thistle and many more names. The species is an annual or bennial plant. Originally a native of Southern Europe through to Asia, it is now found throughout the world.

Milk thistle has been used for thousands of years to support liver, kidney, and gall bladder health. It contains the flavonoid silymarin, which is thought to be responsible for many of the plant's beneficial effects, including liver protection and antioxidant, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Native to the Mediterranean but now found throughout the world, milk thistle is regarded as a weed in some areas, despite its therapeutic potential. When the leaves of the plant are crushed they release a milky sap, giving the herb its characteristic name.

Milk thistle is used in traditional Chinese medicine to clear heat and relieve toxic material, to soothe the liver and to promote bile flow. The herb is also very commonly prescribed by herbalists to help treat liver diseases such as cirrhosis, jaundice and hepatitis.

Silymarin primarily works in protecting and restoring the liver. It is an anti-fibrotic, which means it prevent tissue scarring, and it is thought to act as a “toxin blockade agent” by inhibiting the binding of toxins to liver cell membrane receptors.

Not only is silymarin used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis and toxin-induced liver diseases, but also this powerful compound has been shown to reduce liver injury caused by a number of drugs and enviromental toxins. Except protecting the liver from many factors, it has been miraculously found to regenerate and restore liver cells. However, milk thistle does not solely work for the liver and has been found to help other parts of the human system as well.

Medicinal Applications:

Milk thistle undoubtably helps, restores, regenerates, detoxifies and protects the liver due to the active compound present in the herb called silymarin

Milk thistle and silymarin have been recently found to hold anti-cancer potential and may be used to treat or prevent certain types of cancer. For example it was found to inhibit prostate cancer cells and to increase apoptosis in them.

As well as the liver, milk thistle has been established as very effective for kidney health as well, portraying effects similar to those of liver. It protects, heals and detoxifies the kidneys.

This herb appears to raise levels of beneficial HDL cholesterol and decrease the risk of atherosclerosis. Silymarin may also help reduce blood pressure.

It appears that people who suffer from diabetes received some great results from consuming milk thistle. They saw improvement in their glycemic profile, including significant decrease in glycosylated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Milk thistle may also improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes.

Milk thistle appears to have neuroprotective properties and there is early research suggesting it may be beneficial for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

It has been also found to help promote bile flow.
