Arnica is a genus of perennial, herbaceous plants in the sunflower family. The name given to the plant may be derived from the Greek arni, which translates to “lamb”, in reference to the flowers' soft, hairy leaves. Arnica is also known as mountain tobacco. Arnica grows in the mountain woods and pastures of central Europe and Russia, the Pyreness and in Northern America and Canada. The dried flower heads and rhizome have been used herbally and were first used by Swiss mountaineers to help prevent sore and aching limbs.

There are a number of beneficial compounds present in Arnica, specifically helenalin, linoleic acid, palmitic acid, thymol and various other ethers. This mixture provides the plant with its powerful, renowned abilities.
