Eucalyptus is a diverse genus of flowering trees and shrubs. Members of the plant's genus are indigenous to the Australian continent, but as the plant is comprised of more that 700 species, some can be located in adjacent areas of New Guinea and Indonesia.

Many species, thought not all, are referred to as gum trees, due to the gum that the bark exudes from any break that many occur. The generic name of the plant is derived from the Greek eu wich translates to “well” and kalypto which means “to cover”, referring to the operculum on the calyx that initially covers the flower.

Some eucalyptus species have attracted attention from horticulturists, global development researchers and environmentalists because of desirable traits the plant shows, such as being fast-growing sources of wood, producing oil that can be used for cleaning and as a natural insecticide, or an ability to be used to drain swamps and thereby reduce the risk of malaria

Eucalyptus oil finds many uses like in aromatherapy, as a cure for joint pains. Eucalyptus trees show allelopathic effects; they release compounds which inhibit other plant species from growing nearby, also absorbing vast amounts of water, thus leaving none for other plants.

This particular tree finds many uses in many different areas. The trees oil, as stated before, is very commonly used in aromatherapy and alternatic medicine. It is readily steam distilled from the leaves and can be used for cleaning and as an industrial solvent, a strong antiseptic, for deodorising, in very small quantities as a food supplement, especially in sweets, cough drops, toothpaste and decongestants. It has insect repellent properties.

Traditionally, eucalyptus oil was rubbed on the skin of the chest area to soothe a cold sore and decongest the lungs and open the airway. The indigenous people of Australia used the plant against fevers, due to the oils cooling effect. In the 19th century, the essential oil was considered as a strong anti-inflammatory agent.
