Ginseng is any one of the eleven of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, belonging to the genus Panax. Ginseng can be found in eastern Asia, namely northeast China, Korea, Bhutan and eastern Siberia, North America and typically in cooler climates.

The word ginseng means “man root” in Chinese. This is due to the ginseng root's fork shaped appearance that resembles the legs of a man. The knowledge of this plant's medicinal properties has been known since ancient times, as is evident by from the name of the genus Panax, which stands for panacea in Greek.

Ginseng is not a herb specified in healing particular ailments, alas it acts more as an adaptogen. The active compounds present in the root are ginsenosides and gintonin.

Over the centuries, ginseng has been considered in China as an important component of Chinese traditional medicine. China has historically been the largest consumer of ginseng. The roots are most often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. Ginseng leaves, although not as highly prized, is sometimes also used. Ginseng may be found in small doses in energy drinks and herbal teas, such as ginger coffee. Folk medicine attributes various benefits to oral use of American and Asian ginseng roots, including roles as an aphrodisiac or stimulant treatment.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, American ginseng promotes yin energy, cleans excess yang and calms the body. The reason it has been claimed that American ginseng promotes yin (shadow, cold, negative, female) while Asian ginseng promotes yang (sunshine, hot, positive, male) is that, according to traditional Chinese medicine, things living in cold places or northern side of mountains or southern side of rivers are strong in yang and the converse, so the two are balanced. Chinese and Korean ginseng grows is Manchuria and Korea, the coldest areas known to many Koreans in ancient times. Thus, ginseng from there is supposed to be very yang.
