Fireweed, also known as great willow herb, is a perennial plant that can grow between 2 and 5 feet in height. It has large purple flowers and bears a fruit that is a brown capsule which opens at both ends to release oval seeds. The herb is native throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere, including large parts of the boreal forests. Fireweed is called as such because of its likeliness to spring up in places that have been burnt or otherwise disturbed. Brilliant magenta flowers may be seen rising up out the blackened earth after a forest fires.

The yound shoots of the plant were often collected in the spring by Native American people and mixed with other greens. As the plant matures, the leaves become tought and somewhat bitter. The southeast Native American use the stems in this stage. They are peeled and eaten raw. When properly prepared soon after picking they are a good source of vitamin C and pro-vitamin A. Fireweed is also used as a medicine to treat puss-filled cuts and boils by placing some of the raw stem on the afflicted area. The root can be roasted and consumed, eventhough it tastes bitter. In Alaska, candies, syrups, jellies and even ice cream are made from fireweed. Additionally, monofloral honey made primarily from fireweed nectar has a distinctive, spiced flavor. In Russia, the leaves were used as tea substitute and were even exported, known in Western Europe as Kapor Tea.

Fireweed is antispasmodic, demulcent, astringent and its decoction can help in prostate issues. It has been traditionally employed as an antispasmodic and the herbal parts were made into an infusion to treat asthma, whooping cough and hiccups. The dries leaves were used to soothe irritated mucous membranes. Fireweed is commonly turned into an ointment that is used to soothe skin and is considered especially helpful to children to deal with skin conditions. The plant can also be decocted for use in problems such as diarrhea, colitis, gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome.
