Echinacea is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family. The most common name given to this plant is puple coneflower. The flower is found in eastern and central North America, where they are found frowing in moist to dry prairies and open wouded areas. The have large, showy heads of composite flowers, blooming from early to late summer. The generic name of the herb is derived from the Greek ekhinos, which translates to hedgehog, due to the flower's spiny central disk. Purple coneflower is one of the most popular herbs in America and was discovered and used by the Native Americans in the early days. The roots and upper parts of the plant are used in medicinal preparations from the purple coneflower.

Since older days, echinacea has been used to treat various diseases such as syphilis, malarial infections, blood poisoning and diphteria. In recent times, this wondrous flower is used to reduce the effects of common cold and flu and soothe the symptoms of painful diseases such as sore throat or pharyngitis, severe cough and cold and reduce fever. Most herbalists are of the opinion that echinacea can be recommended to help build the immune system and boost the body's fight against infections. Recent research has shown that echinacea possesses active chemical compounds that help to boost the activity of the immune system, alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and produce positive hormonal, antiviral and antioxidant changes to treat disorders. Echinacea is utilized by many professional herbalists in treating urinary tract disorders, yeast infections, ear infections or otitis media, tinea pedis, inflammation of the sinus and allergic rhinitis. It is also used to treat certain wounds that are slow in healing.

Medicinal Applications:

Echinacea stimulates the overall activity of the cells responsible for fighting all kinds of infection. Unlike antibiotics, which directly attack bacteria, purple coneflower makes our own immune cells more efficient at attacking bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells, including cancer cells. It increases the number and activity of immune system cells uncluding anti-tumor cells, promotes T-cells activation, stimulates new tissue growth for wound healing and reduces inflammation in arthritis and inflammatory skin conditions.

The most consistently proven effect of Echinacea is in stimulating phagocytosis, the consumption of invading organisms by white cells and lymphocytes. Extracts of echinacea can increase phagocytosis by up to 20-40%.

Purple coneflower also stimulates the production of interferon as well as other important products of the immune system, including 'Tumor Necrosis Factor', which is important to the body's response against cancer.

Echinacea also inhibits an enzyme secreted by bacteria to help them gain acess to healthy cells. The flower is shown to have the ability to completely counteract the effect of this enzyme, helping to prevent infection when used to treat wounds.

As powerful as echinacea is when consumed, it has great potency when applied externally as well, more specifically when applied to wounds. It also kills yeast and slows or stops the growth of bacteria and helps to stimulate the growth of new tissue. It combats inflammation too, further supporting its use in the treatment of wounds.
