Turnera diffusa, most commonly known as damiana, is a shrub native to wouthwestern Texas in the United States, Central America, Mexico, South America and the Caribbean. It belongs to the Passifloraceae family. It is a small, aromatic shrub that can be found on dry, sunny, rocky hillsides. Damiana leaves have been used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency by the native people of Mexico, including the Mayan Indians and is used for both male and female sexual stimulation, increased energy, asthma, depression, impotence and menstrual issues.

Damiana is an ingredient in a traditional Mexican liqueur, which is sometimes used in lieu of triple sec in margaritas. Mexican folklore claims that it was used in the “original” margarita.

Historically, damiana has been used to releive anxiety, nervousness and mild depression, especially if these symptoms have a sexual component.
