Pleasantly aromatic and known since antiquity for its aphrodisiac and curative properties, nutmeg is the kernel of a fruit with the same name. The tree's bark and leaves look a lot like a walnut tree and the fruit it bears emits a deep, musky fragrance.

Many times it is used in confectionery, as well as in cooking, in flavoring and processing meat and sausages, in potato dishes but also in liqueur making. It is also utilized in fragrance and soap making. However it is highly toxic and hallucinogenic when consumed in high dosages.

Its roots can be traced back at the Banda islands and it was first introduced to Europe by Portuguese sailors around 1512. It was dimmed as a panacea and was abundantly consumed for invigorating reasons. The spice's strong hallucinogenic properties were fast discovered however as it brought every one who tasted it in a state of delirium. It was also used by women to cause abortions, to no avail, but it contributed in treating the plague. In China, it was used as early as the 7th century for treating stomach disorders.
