Cinnamon is a highly valued spice, which has been in use since biblical times for its fragrance, medicinal and culinary properties. Its woody, sweet odor immediately brings to mind the Far East. Cinammon can be used to naturally scent you home, by boiling some powder and a few sticks at low heat without turning the cooker hood on.

In ancient Greece, cinnamon was better known as “κιννάμωμον” or else kinnamomon, which later became kinnamon. It was firstly used for pharmaceutical reasons in Ancient Egypt and a few Europian cities around 500 BC. At that time, cinammon was considered a very expensive condiment, with 350 grams being equivalent to 5 kilos of silver. Naturally, it happened to be the cause of many wars. It was so highly prized, it was considered as a gift fit for a monarch, or even a god.

The Ancient Greeks used cinammon to scent and flavor wine alongside absinth wormwood, while the Ancient Egyptians mixed the spice with incense and myrrh and used it as an aromatic for burning, a practice which was passed on from Hellenistic times onward.

Cinammon has well known culinary uses. It is usually added in some kinds of desserts, pastries, tea and hot cocoa. It is also used when marinating chicken, fish or red meats and it is the perfect addition in any red tomato sauce.
