Oregano is a common species of Origanum, a genus of the mint family. It is native to temperate western and southwestern Eurasia and the Mediterranean region. It is a perennial herb and it grows in warm and temperate climates. It grows to a height of 20 inches and bears pink or purple flowers. Oregano has a distinct and characteristic odor and flavor and it is hence used considerably in culinary preparations. It is usually confused with sweet marjoram due to its outer appearance. Oregano has numerous varieties and it is also widely used in the perfumery industry and for other herbal and medicinal preparations. One very strange fact about the herb is that in comparison to most dried herbs, oregano's flavor and odour are much stronger when the herb is dries, rather than in its fresh form.

In folk medicine and herbal remedies from Australia to Egypt, oregano has developed a popular following as a veritable cure-all for many health concerns, but the research to back up all of those claims is still hotly debated. However, there are a number of potent active ingredients in oregano that have been deeply studie and their effects on the body are not in question. Oregano oil is an extremely concentrated form of oregano, and is used to treat a number of conditions, but it should always be diluted, as it is very potent. In culinary applications, where it is most commonly seen, it is used to flavor everything from soups, sauces and curries to meat dishes, pizza, pasta, vegetables and even salads.

Oregano is very high in nutritional content, particularly certain vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber of roughage. It is a rich source of vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Some of the minerals found in oregano are iron, calcium and magnesium. Oregano is also known to be a source of omega 3 fatty acids, which help stimulate and regulate the cardiovascular system of the body. Moreover, the dietary fiber it provides helps bowel movement. Oregano also contains beta-carotene, a pigment good for the skin. Additionally, minimal amounts of sugar can be found in oregano, but it does not contain saturated fat.
