Althaea officinalis, or more commonly known as marshmallow, is a perennial species indigenous to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, which is used as a medical and ornamental plant. A confection made from the root since ancient Egyptian time evolved into today's marshmallow treat.

The leaves, flowers and the root of the marshmallow plant have been used in traditional herbal medicine. This use reflected in the name of the genus, which comes from the Greek althein, meaning “to heal”. The plant is traditionally used for irritation of mucuous membranes, including uses as a gargle for mouth and throat ulcers and gastric ulcers. In the Middle Ages, the root had also been used for treating sore throat.

The root extract, known as halawa, is sometimes used as flavoring in the making of the Middle Eastern snack called halva. The flowers and young leaves can be consumed, and are very often included in salads or are boiled and fried. The French recipe “guimauve” included eggwhite meringue, althaea extract and rose water to flavor. This recipe closely resembles contemporary marshmallows, which no longer contain Althaea.

The marshmallow plant contains active ingredients like ammonia, uronic acid, betaine, tannins, asparagines pectin, saccharides and resinous properties. These aformentioned ingredients make it an effective natural remedy for the treatment of problems like tonsillitis, laryngitis, dry skin, leucorrhea, and various other health problems. Marshmallow contains mucilaginous properties that give it its emollient effects. Some of the main vitamins and minerals in althaea include Vitamin A, vitamin B complex, iodine, iron, calcium, sodium and pantothenic acid. These vital components give althaea its anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, demulcent and all other soothing properties.
