The star anise seed is a brown coloured Asian spice, distinctively shaped as a star. In Chinese herbal medicine, the word can be translated as “eight-cornered fennel”, which alludes to the eight-pointed shape of the star anise's fruit. However, it does not bear any relation to neither fennel nor anise seed.

 It is usually used in the beverage and alcohol industry as well as in liqueur making, to give a distinctive taste and aroma. In traditional greek cuisine, it can also be used when making spoon sweets. When cooking, it can be added to red meat dishes, like beef and pork, as well as in sauces and gravies, rice and salads. 

These brown “stars” are also perfect in a hot cup of tea, especially when serving your guests, to add a nice touch to both the taste and the presentation.
